Optit, together with the University of Bologna, accepted the challenge, becoming a trusted partner in updating the conflict solution processes of rail traffic in real time.

Optit implemented algorithms able to respond in situations where there is a risk of simultaneous occupation of resources by the railway system, proposing planning changes that eliminate these conflicts while keeping the service’s numerous constraints and objectives in mind. This innovative optimisation process was applied on a large scale, efficiently managing the traffic in real time: taking tens or hundreds of trains into consideration in a few seconds. The algorithms that Optit created and incorporated into Alstom’s system are constantly evolving in order to meet increasingly sophisticated challenges, which now include minimising energy consumption. This large-scale partnership has resulted in a scientific publication.
